Splashing in forecasting

Splashing automatically distributes a total value across forecast periods.

Splashing applies only to forecast periods. Actual periods are protected and cannot be modified through splashing. Both fiscal and rolling forecasts support splashing.

How splashing works

In fiscal and rolling forecasts, actuals apply only to the first level. Values that are specified at the total level are distributed or splashed across all periods within the selected level, excluding periods with actuals.

Note: Actual periods are displayed as protected, grayed-out cells, and they cannot be edited.

Periodicity behavior

By default, the data entry view shows the periodicity that is configured in the planning cycle definition. You can switch between available periodicity views such as months, quarters, and years.

Available periodicity options depend on these configurations of the first forecast level:

  • If years are configured, you can switch to quarters and months.
  • If quarters are configured, you can switch to months.
  • If months are configured, only the months view is available.

At the first forecast level, switching from a lower to higher periodicity, for example, from months to quarters, creates periods that contain both actual and forecast data.

Regardless of the selected periodicity, actual periods remain protected and cannot be edited. This restriction applies only to the first forecast level, which contains actuals. Subsequent forecast levels contain forecast data only and are not subject to this restriction.
