Charts in an ad-hoc report

To switch from a table to a chart view, select Visualization in the global toolbar and select the chart type from the list. The Visualization menu displays chart types when the report definition supports them.

Column charts are typically used for comparing categories of data or for displaying changes in data over time. Typically, column charts are used with small data sets. Consider using line charts for larger data sets.

In the column chart:

• Categories appear on the horizontal X axis.
• Values appear on the vertical Y axis.
• Supports one series or several series. Colors and a legend identify the series.

Bar charts are the same as column charts except that the categories are displayed on the Y axis and the measure on the X axis. So, the data is displayed horizontally in bars instead of vertically in columns.

In the bar chart:

• Categories appear on the vertical Y axis.
• Values appear on the horizontal X axis.
• Supports one series or several series. Colors and a legend identify the series.

Line charts show the changing values or trends of categories of data over a continuous period. Typically, the categories on the X axis of a line chart represent units of time such as months or years. Each line in a line chart is represented in the chart legend.

In the line chart:

• Categories appear on the horizontal X axis.
• Values appear on the vertical Y axis.
• Supports one series or several series. Colors and a legend identify the series.

Pie and donut charts have only one data series. That is, the data on which pie and donut charts are based is held in one column. Each item in the data series is displayed as a segment of the pie and donut charts and represents a proportion of the total value of the data series.

In the pie and donut charts:

• Each category appears as a slice.
• Slice size is proportional to the category value.
• The legend lists the categories.
• The chart is available when the column axis contains one element.

These limitations apply to ad-hoc charts:

• Number formatting in charts can differ from the formatting in the data grid.
• Visualization mode does not persist. When you open a saved dashboard or refresh the browser, the view resets to the data grid.
• Charts in ad-hoc reports do not support customization or formatting.
• You can specify any number of categories and series. However, charts that use large data sets may not be readable.
• Chart export is not available.
• Pagination is not available. Charts show only one page.
• Axis values are not changed by region settings.
• On mobile devices, charts may show values and components with varying layouts.
