Top & Bottom Analysis report key features

This section describes key features of the Top & Bottom Analysis report.

These are the key features described in this section:

Top / Bottom

This function is available in the standard toolbar and does not require any selections in the data grid. The function opens a menu with these sub functions:

Sub function Description
Ranking You can choose between the top or bottom performers.

The ranking is inherited when you access the report from the C-Suite dashboard's last chart area. The ranking can also be derived from the selected metric's GrowthImpact property when you access it from another report.

Elements Specifies these numbers of records to show in the data grid: 10, 25, 50, or 100. The default is 25.
Rank By Selects the column that is used for sorting such as Reporting Period, Comparison Period, Δ, or Δ%.
Note: You can select only one column at a time.
Icon Dynamically reflects the selected ranking and number elements.

For example, if you analyze the gross profit for June 2025 to identify under-performing regions and prioritize corrective actions, perform these steps:

  1. Open the Top & Bottom Analysis report from the C-Suite dashboard.

    The report inherits this context:

    • Metric: Gross Profit
    • Reporting Period: June 2025
    • Comparison Period: May 2025
    • Dimension: Region
    • Sorting: Top 25 by Δ (Difference)
  2. In the standard toolbar, click the Top / Bottom icon and switch the ranking from top to bottom.

The data grid shows the bottom 25 regions based on the Gross Profit variance. The Others row aggregates all remaining regions outside the bottom 25.

  3. View that Asia has a large negative variance. You can use the Zoom In function to drill down into sub-regions such as Japan and South Korea.
  4. To refine the analysis, click Rank By and switch the sorting to Δ% to see which regions have the steepest percentage decline.
  5. Optionally, export the report to an Excel file and share it with the finance team for follow-up.

Analyze by

This function replaces the current dimension in the data grid with another dimension from the Filter panel.
Note: If you use the Analyze by function, the analyzed dimension is moved into the data grid. The dimension that was previously in the data grid moves to the Filter panel with an active filter based on your selection.

The Analyze by function is displayed in the contextual toolbar or contextual menu when you select a specific cell, the All element, or a column header. If you select a specific element, such as a specific entity element, that element becomes the filter. If you select All or a column header, the entire dimension is filtered as All [Dimension].

For example, you see an entity in the data grid. You select Genesis Automotive and click Analyze by to analyze by a business unit. The business unit is displayed in the data grid, and the entity is moved to the Filter panel for Genesis Automotive.

Expand To

This function is available in the standard toolbar and does not require any selections in the data grid.

The function adds another dimension to the data grid and enables an analysis across combinations of dimensions. If you use the Expand To function, the selected dimension is moved into the data grid. You can expand up to three dimensions in the grid.

The Expand To function is not available if the selected dimension is already in the grid or three dimensions are displayed in the grid.

When a business object is removed, it returns to the Filter panel.

This list shows an example scenario:

  1. You view an entity in the grid.
  2. You click Expand To to expand to a business unit.
  3. The business unit moves from the Filter panel to the data grid.
  4. The grid shows combinations such as Genesis Automotive and Finance.

Zoom In

This function is available in the contextual toolbar or contextual menu (with a right-click) when a cell in the data grid is selected. This function works only in specific rows.

You can use this function to explore the detailed level of a selected dimension. It replaces the selected dimension with its child elements in the data grid. The values and rankings are recalculated based on the new level of detail. Other dimensions in the grid, if available, are not affected. It does not reset expanded dimensions or filters. The system remembers your zoom path and allows you to zoom out later to any previous level.

Note: The zoom state is preserved even if you use Analyze by or Expand To. If you use the Analyze by option on a zoomed dimension, the dimension moves to the Filter panel with the zoomed element as the active filter.

This list shows an example scenario:

  1. You view an entity in the data grid and select Genesis Automotive.
  2. Click Zoom In.

The grid shows child elements such as Genesis Europe or Genesis Asia.

  3. Optionally, if more levels exist, continue to zoom in further.

Zoom Out

This function is available in the contextual toolbar or contextual menu with a right-click.

Note: Use the contextual toolbar to zoom out by selecting a dimension and level from a menu. Alternatively, right-click to zoom out step by step with the contextual menu.

The Zoom Out function enables you to navigate back up the hierarchy of a zoomed dimension. The function replaces the zoomed-in dimension with its parent in the data grid and preserves other dimensions and filters.

You cannot use the Zoom Out function if the zoom in was not performed or the dimension is at its topmost level. However, you can use this function when the data grid shows child elements of a previously zoomed dimension.

This list shows an example scenario:

  1. You zoom in these elements: Entity, Genesis Automotive and you see Genesis Europe and Genesis Asia.
  2. Click Zoom Out and select the top-level entity.

The grid shows Genesis Automotive and other elements again and replaces the regional breakdown.

Reset Zoom

This function is available only in the contextual menu with a right-click.

The function clears all zoom levels and restores the initial dimension structure that is inherited from the dashboard or default state. The filters and expanded dimension stay intact.

You cannot use the Reset Zoom function if the zoom in was not performed or the dimension is at its topmost level. However, you can use this function when the data grid shows child elements of a previously zoomed dimension.

This list shows an example scenario:

  1. You zoomed in these elements: Entity, Genesis Automotive, Genesis Europe.
  2. You click Reset Zoom.

The data grid shows the entity again with no zoom applied. Any other dimensions such as Business Unit or Region remain intact.

Remove Column

This function is available in the contextual toolbar or, with a right click, in the contextual menu .

The Remove Column function allows you to remove a dimension from the data grid. You can use the function by selecting an element or column header. The function is available in the rightmost (last) business object only if more than one business object is displayed in the data grid.
Note: The first dimension cannot be removed.

The removed dimension is moved to the Filter panel .

This list shows an example scenario:

  1. You check these elements: Entity, Business Unit, Region in the data grid.
  2. You select the Region column by clicking the column header and you click the Remove Column function in the contextual toolbar.
  3. The Region dimension is removed from the grid and added to the Filter panel with a filter for the parent level, for example, All Regions.
  4. The grid shows Entity and Business Unit.

Rows

This function is available in the standard toolbar and does not require any selections in the data grid. You can change the row height in the data grid to extra small, small (default), medium, or large.

Scaling and Decimals

This function is available in the standard toolbar and does not require any selections in the data grid.

The scaling and decimal settings in the Top & Bottom Analysis report help present financial data clearly and consistently. These settings are inherited from the C-Suite's Top & Bottom Analysis widget. You can adjust the settings within the report for deeper analysis.

For example, if you select Operating Profit metrics that is scaled in millions (M) in the metrics table, then all values in the Top & Bottom Analysis report are displayed in millions, regardless of their actual magnitude. You can override these settings in the report.

These pre-defined options are available:

  • No Scaling
  • 1,000 Scaling
  • 1,000,000 Scaling
  • 1,000,000,000 Scaling

By default, values are displayed with one decimal place based on the standard rounding, but you can configure up to 8 decimal places in the report.

Export

This function is available in the standard toolbar and does not require any selections in the data grid. Use this function to download the Top & Bottom Analysis report in Excel or PDF format for the offline analysis, sharing, or presentation purposes.
