Limitations and restrictions

This topic details the limitations and restrictions of all aspects of each OLAP object type.

General

Item Maximum value Comment
Memory consumption for one database on a 64-bit Windows 2 TB (due to Windows limits) Depends on the hardware and the operating system.

Cubes

Item Maximum value Comment
Number of dimensions in a cube 30
How often can a dimension be used in a cube 1
Number of cell notes in a cube > 10,000,000
Number of characters in cube name 50
Number of characters in cube description 150
Number of characters in a text cell 1,000,000 bytes
Number of rules in a cube 20 dims: ~ 2,000

10 dims: ~ 4,000

5 dims: ~ 8,000

Varies by the complexity of the rules and the number of dimensions in the cube.
Number of accelerators in a cube ~ 32,767
Length of a cube rule 4-8 Kbyte Text Depends on the complexity of the rule.
Length of a cube accelerator 499
Maximum rule recursion depth 256. Complex rules may prevent the maximum from being fully exploited.
Number of characters in a cell note 30,000
Number of values in a cube 2,000,000,000 Limited by available virtual memory.

Dimensions

Item Maximum value Comment
Number of elements in one dimension 10,000,000 This number includes all leaf members and the aggregated members of different hierarchies.
Number of parents for one base element inside one dimension 65,000 An element cannot have more than 65,000 parents in an entire dimension regardless of the hierarchies.
Number of consolidations in one dimension ~ 1,000,000 A dimension must have at least one base element.
Number of factors in a dimension > 1,000,000
Number of dimensions > 1,000
Number of characters in dimension name 50
Number of characters in dimension description 150
Number of characters in element name 71
Sum of the length of element names for a cell address 1,440
Number of rules in a dimension Dimension rules are used like cube rules.

Hierarchies

Item Maximum value Comment
Number of hierarchies per dimension 500 The number of hierarchies you have may impact performance.
Number of characters in hierarchy name 50
Number of characters in hierarchy description 150
Allowed characters in hierarchy name Same as in the dimension name The name of a hierarchy must not start with a number.

Exception: For backward compatibility implicit hierarchies (the hierarchy name is the same as the dimension name) can start with a number.

Number of elements in a hierarchy 10,000,000
Number of children for one parent 10,000,000
Number of factors in a consolidation 65,530 Different consolidation factors used by the children of a consolidated element
Number of parents for one element inside one hierarchy 65,000 An element cannot have more than 65,000 parents in an entire dimension regardless of the hierarchies.
Number of levels in a hierarchy 127

Subsets

Item Maximum value Comment
Number of elements in a subset 1,000,000
Number of subsets (public and private) > 100,000 The operating system limit of number of files in a directory can lower this limit.
Number of characters in a subset name 100

Attributes

Item Maximum value Comment
Number of attribute tables per database > 3,000
Number of attribute tables per dimension 3
Number of characters in an attribute field name 50
Number of characters in an attribute field description 50
Number of characters in a text field of an attribute table 253
Number of fields within an attribute table 49

Users and OLAP data roles

Item Maximum value Comment
Number of data roles > 10,000
Number of data roles per user > 1,000
Number of concurrently connected users 16,000
