Inserting, fixing, and removing a split

In View mode, if you expand several years and scroll to the right of the report, you lose sight of the product names. One way to resolve this problem is to insert a split.

  1. Open Design mode.
On the horizontal scroll bar, immediately to the left of the left arrow, is a small rectangular button. There is an equivalent button at the top of the vertical scroll bar.
  2. Click the button to the left of the left arrow and drag it across the report. Drop it on the border of columns B and C.
In View mode, the screen is split into two panes, with the list of products in the left pane and the years in the right. Each pane has its own scroll bar and contains a copy of the report. You can scroll through the data in one pane and keep the product list in view in the other.

Because each pane has its own scroll bars, you can still scroll the headings into or out of view in either pane. So, once you have a split where you want it, it can be useful to fix it in place.

  3. To fix a split in place, right-click the split and select Fix.
This creates a single pane with one set of scroll bars. The product list to the left of the split is fixed and you can scroll through the data at the right. To reposition a split, select Window > Unfreeze Panes.
  4. To remove the split, open Design mode and select Window > Remove Split
Splits are useful if a report contains a large amount of data. But it is often preferable to split the data between several reports - particularly if you are designing reports for use in dashboards.
