Administering dimensions
Dimensions are defined in tables that you open in the dimension editor. One line in the table corresponds to one dimension element. You can create, delete, or order elements hierarchically. Some elements (ID, Name, etc.) are predefined. Use attributes to define additional element properties. Attributes and dimension elements are saved in the OLAP model. They link additional information to the dimension elements. You can create attributes.
Hierarchies define the structure of dimension elements and they are relevant for the calculation of sums, because you specify the weight of each element in the aggregated elements.
To define complex calculations, you use OLAP rules. In Financial Consolidation, for example, you use such rules for the currency translation.
In the dimension editor you also assign permissions for dimension elements to users or roles.
You can create subsets of dimensions. A subset is a set of dimension elements. Subsets save the elements and the order, in which they are selected. You can select subsets like dimensions and use them in reports. You see the subsets in the tree underneath the dimension.
To create a subset, right-click the dimension in the tree and select Subset Wizard you specify the name of the subset and select the type of the subset, static, dynamic or parent-child subset:
. In the- Static subsets contain manually selected elements.
- Dynamic subsets are defined by an SQL query. They are adjusted, when elements are added that match the SQL query. With dynamic subsets you can also filter elements by their attributes.
- Parent-child subsets refer to a parent element of a hierarchy that you select. The child elements of the parent are components of the subset. If you add child elements to the parent, they become part of the subset.
