Creating a field derived from another field’s value

A derived extension field automatically supplies the values for a secondary field. These values are based on the primary field. Derived fields can reduce the amount of manual data entry. Where the relationship between values is always one-to-one, the value of one input field can automatically determine the entry in another. In other words, a field’s value(s) can be derived from another field.

For example, if the flavor of ice cream is vanilla, the color must be white. The color is derived from the flavor. After a value is entered manually in the flavor field, Optiva automatically enters an associated value for the color field.

  • Primary field. A primary controls the entry in a dependent field according to a pre-defined association. Values are entered manually in the primary field.
  • Dependent field. A dependent field depends on the primary field for its value. Optiva enters values automatically in this field.
  • Derived value. A derived value is the associated value of the dependent field for the primary field.
