Preset assembly-type items

The Preset assembly-type item provides a template for ordering items with variable lengths. Preset assembly-type items have one or more components of variable length. At minimum, a Preset assembly-type item has at least one variable length component. You specify the scrap factor and VA cutoff length and type for the Preset item’s components. When a primary part number for a Preset assembly-type item is ordered in Sales Order Entry, the system uses the length entered in order entry plus or minus the cutoff length set up in Product Setup and plus any scrap factor to calculate the quantity needed for the primary product’s variable length component(s).

Preset assembly-type items use stock components; dynamic configuration components are available for Configurable assembly-type items only. If a product does not require a variable length component, use standard, non-assembly VA Product Default Setup.

Preset assembly-type workflow

This section outlines the setup of a Preset assembly-type item.

  • In Product Setup, set up the primary part number product and select Preset in the VA Assembly Type field.
  • If required, set up component items. The component line items must be non-assembly stock items where at least one or more of the components items for the primary product is of variable length.
Note: If none of the components for a Preset assembly-type item are variable length items, use standard VA processing. The benefit of a Preset item is the ability to have the system calculate the component length using the VA Cutoff Length from Product Setup and the component quantity and Scrap Factor from VA Product Default Setup to determine the quantity needed for the order.
  • In VA Product Default Setup, set up the primary product defaults using the standard VA template to set up the specifications, component line items, and labor products. When you add the component line items, specify which components are variable length components. When you add component labor products specify the variables for calculating labor. The system can calculate the labor charged for each finished assembly using the variable length quantity calculated for the order, per unit produced or as a single charge against the work order, and cap the number of finished products for which labor is charged.

Example

Suppose you have a primary item (PI) with four components: a left-fitting (LF), a right-fitting (RF), a connector (C), and a connector cover (CC). The connector and connector cover are variable length components. To set up this Preset assembly item you would:

  1. Create product PI in Product Setup, setting the VA Assembly Type to Preset.
  2. Create products LF, RF, C, and CC in Product Setup (if they do not already exist). Select Not Assembly for all of the items. Assign a VA Cutoff Length and VA Cutoff Unit to the C and CC component items.
  3. In VA Product Default Setup, add the product setup for the primary item (PI). Add the VA line for each component, selecting Variable Length Component for C and CC and providing the scrap factor and other component defaults.
