Fabricated kits

A fabricated kit, also known as a transferable kit, is a type of build-on-demand (BOD) kit that can be tied to a sales order and transferred from one warehouse to another. Fabricated kits are a hybrid between prebuilt and BOD kits.

See Comparison of kit types.

When you set up a fabricated kit, you must complete two different setups. In the selling warehouse, you must set up the fabricated kit product. In the fabrication warehouse, you must set up both the fabricated kit product and each of the kit components. You cannot transfer a nonstock kit; however, you can add nonstock components to a fabricated kit in add mode in Sales Order Entry. Additionally, you can drop ship a fabricated kit from the fabricating warehouse if a sales order tie exists.

When you enter a transferable build on demand (BOD) kit in Sales Order Entry, the Fabricated Kit Information page is used to resolve errors or change information any time before you add the line to the order. This window is displayed when you enter a fabricated kit and when you click the Fabricated Kit Information button in the toolbar of the Advanced Line Entry window. Line validation does not occur unless the information on the Fabricated Kit Information page is validated. If you submit the page and errors occur, or use the back arrow to exit the page, the line cannot be validated. Use the Fabricated Kit Information button to return to the Fabricated Kit Information page and make changes.

Ties

Order tie associations are established between the sales order line, the warehouse transfer line, and the kit production work order. These ties are created for each line that is a fabricated kit in Sales Order Entry. In other words, if you enter ten lines on the order with ten fabricated kit products, ten work orders and ten warehouse transfers are created.

Availability

Availability for components comes from the fabricating warehouse, not the sales order warehouse. With anticipated sales, the fabricated kit in the sales order warehouse may have inventory quantity available. Because you always assume that you want to fabricate the kit, you must have security to override the available quantities and use the on hand in the sales order warehouse.

The Sales Order Entry Processing Back Order Fill product allocation hierarchy uses the same priority for fabricated kit work order components tied to a sales order line that it uses for a regular sales order line during the replenishment process.

Usage

Usage for the fabricated kit components is tracked in the fabricating warehouse during work order completion. Usage for the components is not tracked in inventory beyond the work order build process.

Price and Cost

Because fabricated kits are considered a whole product when transferred to the sales order warehouse, prices are not rolled on the kit components. The price for the kit comes from the sales order warehouse kit pricing structure without component rolls.

Product costs are rolled when the kit is entered in Sales Order Entry. During the acceptance process in KP Work Order Center Entry, the kit cost is rolled a final time, and the final cost is copied to the sales order line and tied warehouse transfer line.

Components

Individual kit components belong to the fabricating work order. You can specify kit components when creating a sales order but the fabricating warehouse can replace the components with supersedes and substitutes. If there are insufficient quantities of the components required to build the kit, the components can be replenished by tying purchase order, warehouse transfer, or KP work order to the work order in KP Work Order Center Entry. When you set up the fabricated kit in Product Setup, you can specify whether kit components print on the warehouse transfer and sales order pick tickets.

Maintenance

When you assemble a transferable build-on-demand kit (WT-BOD) in one warehouse and transfer it to the requesting warehouse to fill an order line, you can make changes to the kit and associated documents from Sales Order Entry. For example, you enter a BOD kit on an order in the main warehouse. The warehouse transfer and work order that are tied to the sales order are created for the fabricating warehouse. When you make a quantity change to the sales order, the tied warehouse transfer and work order are changed also.

When you access a WT-BOD in change mode in Sales Order Entry these validations are performed before you can continue and make changes:

  • The tied work order is not currently in use by another user.
  • The tied warehouse transfer is not currently in use by another user.
  • The tied work order has not been assembled (the status is less than or equal to 2).
  • The tied work order has been accepted but not updated (the status must be in Order or Printed stage).
  • The tied warehouse transfer has not been shipped (the stage is less than or equal to 2).

If the tied work order and warehouse transfer pass the validations, the kit components are removed from the tied work order and copied to the tied sales order. The inventory postings that were previously made for the WT-BOD kit are also reversed. At this time, you can access the sales order and make the necessary changes.

After you are finished with the changes, the components are copied back to the tied work order and inventory is updated for all components relevant to the changes you made. The tied warehouse transfer is then updated for any changes to the kit quantity ordered or unit of measure.

Delete

If you delete a WT-BOD line, the kit components for the kit are also deleted from the sales order. Inventory is not posted for the components at this time because inventory was previously reversed when the components were moved from the work order back to the sales order for maintenance.

The tied work order is then updated for the deletion. This usually results in the work order and the tie to the sales order being deleted. The tied warehouse transfer is updated for the deletion. This usually results in the deletion of the warehouse transfer line and possibly the entire transfer if the line is the only line on the warehouse transfer.

You cannot delete a WT-BOD kit component in Sales Order Entry that is tied to a Kit Production work order. If you attempt to do this, this message is displayed:

Cannot Sub/Delete Product - Serial/Lot/Whse Mgr/Ties Previously Assigned (6087)

Printing

Fabricated kit information always prints on the Kit Production documents. Use Product Setup to specify if you want the components to print on the Warehouse Transfer and Sales Order Entry pick tickets.
