Types of tally products and required setups
You can set up three types of tally products in Product Setup:
Random
A random tally product, which is a type of dimensional tally, is the most common type of tally product. If a customer requests certain percentages of lengths, but is willing to accept any mix that equals the total linear feet ordered, you can select the mixture of lengths based on inventory. The components, or lengths, you can select must be designated for the tally product in KP Tally Mix Setup. You can set up a recommended mix and to allow for greatest flexibility, set up optional components with 0%. When ordering, you can change the quantity for a random tally product, but it cannot be back-ordered.
For example, your customer orders 1600 linear feet of 2x4 fir. You can fill the order with 125 8-foot boards and 60 10-foot boards. Any combination of boards is acceptable as long as the customer receives 1600 linear feet of 2x4 fir. Because this tally is more flexible than the specified dimensional tally, you may be able to offer a better price for the tally. The inventory data, sales, and purchase history of random dimensional tally components is tracked by your inventory system.
Specified
A specified tally product, which is a type of dimensional tally, has a predetermined percentage of components, or lengths, that are set up in KP Tally Mix Setup and cannot be changed. Customers must be willing to accept back orders if you cannot provide the exact mix immediately. Because you stock each component in the tally, the customer could order each SKU as a separate line item and be charged the standard price for the product instead of the tally price.
For example, your customer orders 1,000 lineal feet of 2 x 4 fir in a mix that consist of 20% of 10-foot pieces, 20% of 8-foot pieces, and 60% of 12-foot pieces. Your calculations show that the customer should receive 200 10-foot pieces, 250 8-foot pieces, and 500 12-foot pieces.
Memo
A memo tally product is a tally product sold by a total number of linear feet without regard to the lengths or quantities in the mix. An example is a bundle of molding. Memo tallies are similar to random dimensional tallies, but you do not track inventory for each component or the lengths in the mix. The mix varies and the component costs do not justify precise inventory tracking of each component length. Inventory tracking occurs for the parent tally product.
This type of tally is called a memo tally because building material companies document sales transactions by printing the mix composition, such as quantities for each length, in the sales and purchase order documents. The mix composition is kept for reference and informational purposes only. All components are considered part of one generic SKU for the memo tally product.
You can tie a sales line that contains a memo tally to a purchase order or warehouse transfer. You can maintain the memo tally mix from the sales order.
