Setting a starting GL journal number

Use the SA Journal Setup to start journal numbering with a specific number. This is beneficial in a multi-company environment where each company uses a series of different journal numbers, because journal numbers are unique within each company. When setting up journal number ranges, be sure to make each range of numbers large enough to avoid running out of journal numbers.

For example, the following ranges may be assigned to Companies 1, 2, and 3:

  • Company 1: journal range 1-9999
  • Company 2: journal range 10000-19999
  • Company 3: journal range 20000-29999
  1. Select System Administrator > Setup > Journal.
  2. Click New.
  3. Specify a journal number.
The journal number must be one less than the desired starting journal number. For example, in Company 2, the journal number added must be 9999. When the first transaction entry function is entered, the last journal number used is increased it by one. Therefore, the first journal number used in Company 2 is 9999 plus one, or 10000.
  4. Click Save.
  5. In the Journal Assignment Maintenance window, click Edit.
  6. Specify the calendar or fiscal period.
  7. Click Printed.
  8. Click Save.
Repeat these steps for additional companies.
