Event System user preferences options in the Windows client

Event System settings control how often the system checks for new messages in your Inbox,whether and how you are notified of new messages, and how the system displays unread messages in the Inbox. There are also settings that determine how you interact with certain Application Event System forms.

This table shows the available Event System user preferences options in the Windows client:

Option Description/Comments/Procedures
Check for New Messages Every Select the time interval at which the system is to check your Inbox for new messages.
Play a Sound To play the specified .wav file that notifies you each time you receive a new message, select this option.

To select a .wav file, click Browse and select a file.

If you do not select a .wav file, the a default .wav file is played each time you receive a new message.

To listen to the selected .wav file, click Play.

Note: By default, audio playback on remote desktop connection is disabled. We recommend that you use this option only if you are logged in to the system locally.
Display an Icon in the Notification Area To display an envelope icon in the Windows task bar notification area whenever new messages are received, select this option The envelope icon is displayed only if you are logged in to the system. This option is selected by default.

If the envelope icon is displayed in the taskbar, you can double-click the icon to open the Inbox form and view your messages.

The envelope icon is hidden after you double-click it to open the Inbox form, or if when you refresh the Inbox form to display all new messages.

Display an Alert with Message Count To display a balloon notification above the Windows taskbar notifications area, every time you receive a new message in your Inbox, select this option. The balloon notification alerts you of new messages and displays the number of new messages received since the last alert.

When this option is selected, you can use the Alert Duration slider to control how long each alert message is displayed. You can set the alert duration from 10 to 60 seconds.

If you select this option, then the Preview button is enabled. To see a sample of the alert message, click the Preview button.

Display Unread Messages Using Boldface Font To display unread messages in bold font, in the Grid View of the Inbox form, select this option. With this option, you can easily distinguish read and unread messages.
Display Unread Messages Using Background Color To display unread messages with a specific background color, in the Grid View of the Inbox form, select this option. With this option, you can easily distinguish read and unread messages.

To select a different background color for unread messages, click the background color drop-down button and use the color picker dialog box.

Handler Editing Select an option from the list. The option that you select determines how metadata is displayed in the Event Actions form, and the behavior of the Event Handler Diagram form.

The available options are:

  • Novice: If you select Novice, then in the Event Actions form, the metadata code display is hidden and the button is set to Show Details >>. In the Event Handler Diagram form, these options are set:
    • You can rapidly drag action nodes onto the diagram, without automatically opening the Event Actions form.
    • Any condition specifications are hidden.
    • The sequence number of the node is hidden.
    • The display of hover tool tip text for each node, to the basic event action description, is limited.
  • Expert: If you select Expert, then in theEvent Actions form, the metadata code is displayed by default and the button is set to << Hide Details. In the Event Handler Diagram form, these options are set:
    • The Event Actions form opens whenever you drag an event action node onto the diagram.
    • Any condition specifications are displayed.
    • The sequence number of the node is displayed.
    • Both the basic event action description and any parameters associated with the event action in the hover tool tip text are displayed.
