Start and number of periods
If you change the Start or Number of Periods for a plan object, data associated with its measure is not automatically removed. If you have previously defined measures for a given date range (Start Period and Number of Periods) for a plan object, and you want those values (and external links) removed, go to the Measures Source tab and set the data source to None before changing the plan object's effective dates. If you want to change the Number of Periods to 0, you must first go into the Measures Source tab and set the type of measure to None for all scenarios. If you leave the measures on the old dates, they continue to contribute to your overall plan performance value calculation.
This section explains what happens when you have not removed the values prior to changing the Start Period or the Number of Periods.
If you leave the Start unchanged and change the Number of Periods, there are two possible results. If you increase the number of periods, the next time you bring up the Measures Source tab, the newly included periods have no assigned values. If it is a SQL or CPM source, you can set the data source for the selected row and add the values for all the periods, including the newly included ones. If you decrease the number of periods, the effect is cosmetic. The values that are now after the end period are still there, and will still be used in calculating the performance measures. The only real change is in the number of periods shown on reports.
If you change the starting period, there are also two possible results. If you change the start to a period that already has a value (link) defined on it, it is treated similar to the previous case where you increased the number of periods. For example, if start was January for 6 months and then you changed it to March, August would now be the last period instead of June. When you bring up the Edit Measures Source Actual page, the periods which are now included in the effective date range but were not previously (July and August) will have no assigned values. You can reselect the external data if it is a SQL or CPM measure. Note that the data on the periods between the old start and the new start will still be there, and will continue to contribute to plan performance. If you change the start to a period that does not have a value (link) defined (for example, moving it forward from January to November), the behavior is slightly different. The defined values (links) will stay there (as is always the case), but when you bring up the Measures Source tab, it will say that no measure has been defined for this range (the Source field is set to None). When you change the source type, it resets all the values (links) in the effective period range. Then you can reselect your external measures or reenter your manual measures.
