Inserting and deleting rows and columns

Using Insert/Delete you can add rows or columns to the view. Unlike the toolbar commands, you can also delete the added rows or columns. Insert/Delete automatically updates any charts associated with the view.

You can add rows or columns to data areas to create ad hoc calculations or display information. For example, you can add totals or ratios that do not need to be stored in the database.

It is important to use the CPM Views commands, not Excel's Insert features, because the view has no knowledge of the Excel rows/columns. In this case, if you refresh the data, the Excel-inserted rows and columns disappear.

This command is disabled if you reconnect to the server after disconnecting. To enable the command, refresh the worksheet and click on a cell in the data area or an on-grid member.

Keep these in mind:

  • You cannot insert or delete rows or columns if a worksheet is protected, the commands are disabled.
  • Views are inserted above the selected member; columns are inserted to the left of the selected column.
  • Data from inserted rows or columns is for display only and cannot be submitted to the database.
  • Inserted rows and columns are static in the grid. When member selections for the grid change or the grid is rotated or pivoted, the inserted rows or columns appear in exactly the same Excel rows or columns where they were defined.
  • Do not use Insert/Delete in views that use the drill mode, omit missing, or sorting features.
  • Before inserting a view row or column, if you want to protect Excel formatting anywhere within your view, clear Format as in view definition for the data area.

When you use the Insert View Row and Insert View Column commands, the row or column is inserted before the selected member. In order to insert a row or column after the last row or column, we recommend editing the row or column after the data area to contain the information and formatting you require.

Inserted rows and columns are static. It is best not to use the Omit Missing command along with inserted rows or columns, since Omit Missing causes empty rows or columns to not be displayed, affecting the relative location of the inserted rows or columns if they are already inserted. For similar reasons, it is also best not to use the sorting feature when the data area will have inserted rows or columns.
