Posting rules

A journal's eligibility to post during a consolidation is based on the consolidation scope, the journal periodicity, the focus range, and the journal's effective life.

  • At least one adjustment in a journal must be in scope before a Standard, Standard PL-BS, Acquisition, or Intercompany Elimination journal will post.
  • The periodicity of the journal must match the periodicity of the schedule in the consolidation. For example, a monthly journal can only post if the adjusted lines belong to a monthly schedule.
  • The effective life must be defined in terms of leaf periods of the periodicity of the journal.
  • A consolidation only posts a journal whose effective life is defined by the leaf periods of the journal's periodicity. A consolidation does not post a journal with an invalid effective life definition but writes a message to the log file for each invalid journal.
  • A journal cannot post to the opening balance period, a period outside the effective life of the journal, or a period outside the focus range.
  • Reference, Reclassification, and Ownership journals only post to translated currency (not local).
  • For Reclassification journals to post, both destination and source members must be in scope.
  • For a Reference journal to post, only the destination members need to be in scope (source members do not need to be in scope). If the source lines are not in the same schedule as the destination line, the source schedules must be consolidated first to provide accurate values for the destination lines.
  • Reference and Reclassification journals post according to the relationship of the natural sign of the source and destination accounts instead of the mathematical sign of the source value. For a Reference journal, an amount is debited or credited to the source line, depending on the Reverse Sign value specified for the source line. That is, if a credit value currently exists for the source line and the Reverse Sign value for the source line is N (for No), then the amount is credited to the source line; if the value is Y (for Yes), then the credit is reversed, and the amount is debited to the source line instead
  • Reference and Reclassification journal source amounts include data from web, Ownership, and Intercompany Eliminations journals but never include data from other Reference and Reclassification journals.
  • For posting rules regarding Ownership journals, see "Posting ownership journals"
