Focus Range

A focus range identifies a portion of data that can change in the database. Using a focus range, you can:

  • Prevent users from changing previous budget passes.
  • Prevent changes to data imported from other sources.
  • Close a period.
  • Limit the periods that you want processed.

The Focus Range page is used to define which portions of data are open for data submissions. When a focus range is set for any given version, the data can only be modified within the focus range, and anything outside of that range can only be viewed, not modified. If no focus range is set for a version, the default is that the entire version is open. If you want to protect an entire version, such as actuals, you can set the focus range for that version to a time frame that is well in advance of, or well after the current period.

Focus range protection applies only to database access through our products. The data is not protected when accessed through direct SQL commands, third-party loading tools, or other access methods.

The focus range is defined by identifying a range of periods that is open for updates, and the version to which this range applies. This focus range, once set for particular periods and a particular dimension, applies uniformly across all other dimensions, such as organization and schedules.

Period and year settings apply to only the one particular version to which you are applying the focus range, and if you want to set the same focus range for several versions, you must set several focus ranges, one for each version.
