Automatic layout mode versus manual layout mode

Designer has automatic and manual placement modes. The current mode is available at the bottom of the page. Hover over the mode to view a tooltip with additional information about the behavior of the mode.

When you create a report, the report is in automatic layout mode. When you add a column from the subject area to a report, two entries are automatically created in Birst:

  • The column entity and a label entity.
  • The column label is in the header band and the content is available in the details band. When the column entity is removed, the corresponding label is automatically removed.

After an element is moved on the report that is in layout mode, the layout mode is switched to manual. Any added columns are added to the undisplayed content band. Columns in this band are included in totals, but are not displayed on the report.

To show the entity on the report, move the entity from the undisplayed content band to another band in the report. Select More Actions > Move Entity To and select the band to which to move the entity.
