Creating a virtual container

A virtual container is a container or packaging item for which no labels or shipping documents are printed. A virtual container is not considered in EDI processing. You must use virtual containers for items that are not to be packed to process tasks like label printing. Generally, task processing is only available if a unit is packed. If you use a virtual container as packaging unit, you can proceed if the Packaging Status is set to Unpacked.

To assign a virtual container to an item:

  1. Select Shipping > Packagings.
  2. Click Drill down to open a shipment line.
  3. Click Edit.
  4. Optionally, create a virtual container from an existing container.
    1. Click Select in the appropriate line to edit the container
    2. In the Container Type field, click Search.
    3. Select a virtual container from the list.
For a virtual container, the Virtual Container check box in the Packaging Info dialog box is selected.
    4. Click OK.
The Packaging Status is set to Unpacked, but you can now process tasks and print labels.
  5. Optionally: Add a new container as a virtual container.
    1. Click Add Containers.
    2. In the Container Type field, click Search.
    3. Select a virtual container from the list.
    4. Specify this information:
      Quantity
This field shows the quantity of each item in the transport handling unit that is shipped.
The shipped quantity depends on the container type. A palette and boxes that are contained, for example, must not have a shipped quantity entry at any given time.
    5. Click OK.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Click Save.
